Memories of Jim Clary

Jim went out of his way to welcome me to Macomb in 1969 when I was the new kid in school at the new "Sixth Grade Center" (the old high school). I always remembered that. It's obvious he was raised with a strong set of values. From what I see these days, he must have been raised with a strong work ethic too! Well, I know he was. I often saw him working at his dad's gas station on East Jackson Street when I'd stop to put air in my bicycle's tires.

1999 Update

Spouse: Sheila

Children: None

Occupation: Co-Owner, Management Compensation Group - Chicago, Inc., a boutique consulting firm that specializes in the design, implementation, funding, and administration of non-qualified executive benefit plans for Fortune 1000-caliber companies

Occupation of Spouse: Sheila owns Celebrity Focus, an agency that represents major corporations and assists them in obtaining celebrity talent and professional athletes for marketing and promotional campaigns, commercials, appearances, and private events.

What's New: I missed the '96 event. We both run our own businesses, which affords us a lot of time off. We have no children yet, but have lots of employees who act like children, so it seems to balance out. We spend our non-working time traveling (Paris, London, Italy, Spain, Monte Carlo, Hawaii, Napa Valley, Cabo, Las Vegas in the last 12 months). Our interests include daily workouts (running and weight training), marathons (last one was San Diego Rock 'n Roll marathon), scuba diving, skydiving, golf, reading, and investing. We spend weekends in the summer aboard our boat, "Anything's Possible" in Lake Michigan, which we co-own with a friend. One of our real passions is collecting fine wine, and have built a fairly large collection. We own a home in Scottsdale, Arizona, and try to spend at least one long weekend there per month.

1996 Update

Occupation: President and Owner, Management Compensation Group

Hobbies: Golf, skiing, travel, reading, boating

What I’ve done in the last 20 years:
  • Graduated from WIU with B.B. in Finance
  • Built successful Northwestern Mutual practice
  • Leveraged NML practice into ownership of Management Compensation Group, where we advise senior management of Fortune 500 companies on executive benefit issues
  • Traveled extensively
  • Lectured throughout U.S. on subject matter, including several national TV appearances
What I plan to do in the next 20 years: Continue to build the business for 5-10 years, sell it, and retire to golf and ski. Probably start another company at that point, or become an active investor in select start-ups. Hopefully begin a family as main priority.

Words of advice to Class of 1996: You can never have enough education, but perhaps even more important are the people skills you develop along the way.
